Complete with easy silhouettes and soothing colour palettes, the curation includes dresses, kurta sets and embellished shoes, along with accessories that lend the perfect finishing touch. Vogue spoke to Dasgupta about her collaboration with 85 Lansdowne, the key pieces of the collection she is curating and more.
Tell us a little about the summer collection you are curating for 85 Lansdowne
Kolkata is a city of talents and it is inspiring to see so many young, driven designers working passionately season after season. ‘Summer Edit at 85 Lansdowne’ is an idea to curate an eclectic mix of easy separates, bags, shoes and accessories to create our own summer story of smart and inspiring collectibles. Shalini Nopany and Pooja Goenka of 85 Lansdowne are veterans in giving the city’s style and talent a definitive direction, and are great partners to collaborate and experiment with on such a fun idea.
What is the idea behind the curation?
To unfold a statement summer that is joyous, spirited and chic for the ones who juggle work and play with equal élan. The collection is a blend of easy breezy silhouettes that can flow from sunsets on a yacht to lunches by the beach, and from island hopping trips to lakeside nuptials, while matching the myriad moods of outdoors in the summer. The colour palettes flatter the skin and the sun—fresh yellows, corals, whites and creams, and the classic black, in fabrics that are light and lush—bamboo cottons, chanderis, cottons and linens. Complementing these styles are accessories that work as classic staples, and complete the look while cultivating a whim of fun and fancy for a seamless summer getaway.
Tell us about the designers who are a part of your collection?
The versatile pool of talent who has put together the Summer Edit includes clothes by Dev R Nil, Pinki Sinha and Varsha Wadhwa. Bags and clutches by Love To Bag By Ayushi and Duet By Priyanka Baid, as well as handcrafted jewellery by Vasundhara Mantri and shoes by Rohan Arora are part of the collection.
Why did you pick these designers?
The designers are a mix of seasoned and young talents that stock at 85 Lansdowne. We brought them together to put forward a collection, so that there is something to complement every wardrobe. While people try to work out the perfect colour palate, there are occasions which demand more oomph to transform the simple silhouette into a flattering piece, or to create an effortless way to work the trend. This is an essential key seasonal wardrobe update. Each of them are a label in their own right—individualistic and launching their own story—yet they make a great combination. They complete the Summer Edit story with the hottest combinations that are splashed with style—no longer merely functional finishes, but design details at affordable prices in the range of Rs 10,000 onwards.
What are the key elements of the collection?
The collection is about staple separates that are versatile with quintessential celebratory elements. Delve into places combining prét and high street by Dev R Nil (for men and women), timeless love stories of handlooms in fun and flirty rhythms by Pinki Sinha and ones that pay a contemporary homage to ’70s beach fashion by Varsha Wadhwa. The accessorises include clutches that draw inspirations from ‘Midsummer Night’s Garden’ by Love to Bag by Ayushi and ‘Lost in the woods’ by Duet by Priyanka Baid, a natural summer soirée of handcrafted jewellery by Vasundhara Mantri and a quirky splash of shoe-fetish with ‘Leela’ by Rohan Arora.
Being a model, you have worked with multiple designers in your career. Does this curation reflect your personal sense of style?
My personal style is classic, while being high on comfort and function. I like to make what I wear into my own. I enjoy combining designer labels with high street brands. More often than not, I’ll go for a big accessory—I love big watches and bracelets. So I’d say yes; shades of my personal style do reflect in this curation.
Tell us about the accessories that will be a part of the collection
There are handbags, jewellery and shoes. While Love to Bag by Ayushi is showcasing intricate hand-embroidered bags with fine Japanese bugle beads, Duet by Priyanka Baid has crafted bags from wood, showcasing a combination of factory waste and innovative design. We also have Vasundhara Mantri’s edgy statement jewellery pieces that are an amalgamation of various elements, and blend together to create the perfect piece for a summer soiree and for travel. The collection also comprises classy juttis, stylish brogues, brightly coloured mules and elegant block heels for women, along with some summer styles for men.
What are your favourite pieces from the collection?
I absolutely adore the denim shifts from Dev R Nil. Varsha Wadhwa also has a white winged jacket that I have my eyes on, and Pinki Sinha has beautiful chanderi angarakhas with shararas that I want to get for myself.
