Malini Vachani-Akerkar is well known in hospitality circles as one half of the duo (the other being her husband Rahul Akerkar) behind iconic eateries like Indigo, Indigo Deli and Tote on the Turf. The entrepreneur is taking a hiatus from her culinary conquests for creative pursuits as she unveils her maiden jewellery collection with a preview at Ensemble, Kemps Corner, Mumbai.
Vachani-Akerkar’s eponymous brand, Malini Akerkar Design, already has her pursuing her passion for painting, interior styling and art deco-inspired semi-precious jewellery in its latest extension. Her penchant for vintage jewellery is a long-standing one, inherited early on from her mother. Her time as a student in London also contributed to this love, as she often scoured flea markets for unique vintage finds. “This was further cemented when, 25 years ago, Rahul (Akerkar) proposed to me with a stunning antique art deco ring that belonged to his German great grandmother,” recalls Vachani-Akerkar.
Over the years, Vachani-Akerkar has been collecting art deco furniture, art and fashion with fervour. “But I found myself wanting whenever I hunted for art deco jewellery. So two years ago, I started researching jewellery from the era, which I have now revived with my line,” she explains. The semi-precious range of jewellery is equal parts accessible and affordable, and features earrings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets and rings using semi-precious and hydrothermal gemstones, and high quality Swarovski stones set in silver and white gold alloys.
“We lave laid immense focus on the handicraft value and aesthetic sensibility of the pieces. They are timeless heirloom collectibles that can be passed down for generations,” says Vachani-Akerkar. Driving this point home is the campaign featuring three generations of women who have played a part in inspiring the jewellery—Jinx Akerkar (Malini’s mother-in-law), Radhika Vachani (her sister), Avantika Akerkar (her sister-in-law), Shaan and Amalia Akerkar (her teenage daughters), and Nida Merchant (her friend).
Age and occasion are no bars for the designer. Each piece from her launch collection is bound to resonate with well-travelled multifaceted women, who will be able to style these classic designs for a versatile roster of events ranging from dinner parties to destination weddings.
