It might be that first week back at work feeling, or perhaps it’s a symptom of the fashion girl’s eternal quest to achieve that I-just-woke-up-like-this nonchalance, but whatever the reason, 2020 fashion is clearly all about the slouch. From oversized shackets that look like they’ve been borrowed from your dad to trousers that end in puddles around your shoes, we’ve lost count of the number of pieces that have embraced this unapologetically lethargic silhouette.
While our grandmas might’ve told us off for slouching, there’s something so intangibly chic about applying this rule to our wardrobes. For example, whenever I shop the high street, I will often try on pieces in one size too large, as somehow it can instantly make an outfit look so much more premium (perhaps it’s the excess fabric that reminds us of designer buys). Just look at the minimalist stylings of Alexis Foreman, who is rarely seen out of her oversized, slouchy separates or Rosie HW, who has a bit of a penchant for wrinkled boots and loose roll necks.
If you’re experimenting with this trend, I would recommend starting out with one slouchy piece and balance it out with a tailored separate. For example, you could try an oversized shirt French tucked into a pair of straight-leg jeans or throw a leather shirt over a fitted white tee and slip skirt. So simple yet so effective.
