and Jana Kramer ’s relationship has been Mike Caussin plagued with infidelity since the start.
two divorces (from Michael Gambino and the former Johnathon Schaech) and a whirlwind engagement to Brantley Gilbert, One Tree Hill star met Caussin in 2014. As self-proclaimed “love addicts,” the duo fell hard and fast. Within the first month of their relationship, however, Kramer accused the former NFL player of cheating and wiped him from her social media profiles. Caussin subsequently deleted his social media accounts altogether and they reconciled, marrying in May 2015.
The pair subsequently welcomed daughter Jolie in January 2016. Less than one year later,
Us Weekly exclusively revealed that Caussin was unfaithful.
“I acknowledge that certain actions and behaviors have caused issues in my marriage and I am deeply sorry for the pain I have caused Jana,” he said in a statement at the time. “I have and will continue to take the steps needed to change who I am as a person in order to be a better husband and father.”
While Kramer didn’t hold back about how hurt she was during her subsequent stint on
Dancing With the Stars — later admitting she had “flings and flirts” while they were separated — the duo got back together and renewed their vows in December 2017. Kramer gave birth to son Jace in 2018.
I wish it was a complete fairytale and perfect, but it’s not,” she said on the debut episode of their “Whine Down” podcast in 2019. “At the end of the day, it could be — if you really, truly work on it, and both partners are willing to work on it, then you can have a beautiful relationship.”
The duo continued to document their ups and downs, prompting split speculation in 2020 after
she scrubbed him from her and the podcast’s social media pages. While they later had a New Year’s Eve “re-do” and were back on track, Kramer told Us in January 2021 that she doesn’t “1000 percent” Caussin. Two months later, she posted a selfie of herself crying after one of their fights.
“Nothing is perfect. This was a few weeks ago in Canada. I took this picture to almost remind myself that even though in the moment it seems like everything is doomed it’s not,” she wrote in March 2021. “We talked about our blow up on this week’s podcast and I think it’s an important one for everyone to hear. No relationship is perfect and when blow ups or fights happen sometimes we believe it’s done and over but really it’s a moment for growth and more understanding and to lean into your partner. Now, when you’re in the middle of the fire, it’s hard to lean in and see that but just know it’s not the end of the world. And we all have these moments so [you’re] not alone.”
One month later,
Us confirmed Kramer filed for divorce. Reports that Caussin, who has yet to publicly comment on the split, cheated again soon followed.
”I’ve fought y’all. I’ve loved hard. I’ve forgiven. I’ve put the work in. I’ve given everything I have, and now I have nothing else to give,” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “I just can’t fight any longer. It’s time to heal. Thank you for all the love, heart, and support, in many ways you have fought on this journey alongside me, and for that I am grateful. I’ll always encourage you to continue the good fight, but you can’t fight it alone.
Scroll through for a timeline of how they’ve navigated cheating claims during their relationship:
Not long after Kramer and Caussin started dating during the summer of 2014, she unfollowed him on social media and hinted that he cheated. The twosome reunited and got engaged that December.
Us broke the news in September 2016 that Caussin was seeking treatment for sex addiction after he cheated on his wife with several different women. The “I Got the Boy” songstress later revealed that she learned about the cheating when their daughter was 5 months old.
“We had just celebrated a year [of marriage] … That was tough. And it’s still real hard to look back on those memories because to me, they were real, but how were they real when you were doing this?” she said on
Tamron Hall in 2019, alleging during their joint interview that “he could have gone to jail for some of the things” that he did before he sought treatment.
Caussin added at the time that they weren’t sharing how many people he cheated with. “The thing is, whether it’s [one] or a thousand, it doesn’t matter. I still committed those acts, I still caused pain and a rift in our relationship and hurt the woman that I loved, the damage has already been done,” he said.
In March 2019, Kramer and Caussin revealed he suffered a “massive” relapse in his sex addiction one year prior.
“No sex outside the marriage,” Caussin said on their podcast. “I’m not minimizing cheating because we have other things in Jan and I’s discussion of boundaries that’s cheating. But no sex outside of the marriage. I just want people to be clear that there wasn’t any other affair since that moment.”
Kramer clarified that the athlete did “something he should not have done that was in a circle that was very red, like, bad and could have been awful.”
She explained: “And that was a, you know, massive relapse. Yes, it wasn’t physical out of the marriage, but it was something where the action was basically … We’re just basically happy that someone didn’t show up. … I showed up at the hotel instead. If you really want to know.”
The actress detailed finding a
topless photo on her husband’s phone during an October 2019 podcast.
“I saw it, and … my heart just fell. I was like, it’s here. It’s happened again. I’m such a f—king idiot … Like, how is this happening again?” she said after explaining she found the text on his Apple Watch after he deleted it from his phone. “I don’t want to live this kind of life. We just moved into this beautiful house, and we had our second kid, and we fought so hard. Why is this happening again?”
She later told
Extra that the picture was from “a bot” and not an “actual person.” Kramer said: “I still do not believe he was going to tell me about it. I totally get why he would delete it and not tell me. I get that thought process, 100 percent. It is just that the toll that the trauma takes … I don’t know how much I have left of that to cry out anymore.”
Caussin added, “This has probably been the most difficult thing to date … the most difficult to swallow.”
Kramer revealed during an October 2020 podcast episode
that she got a DM that claimed Caussin cheated again.
“The reason why it caught me off guard was because the very first time I found out Mike cheated on me was through a DM,” she said at the time. “I think — I told my therapist this — I almost have this weird PTSD where I go through my DMs, almost looking to see if the truth is gonna prevail in the DM again. I have this fear when I go through my DMs. … It just said, ‘Mike cheated again, I’m sorry.’ And I looked at the person’s profile, it had zero followers, so it’s like they just made this account. So, I reached out.”
While Kramer concluded that the allegation didn’t have any merit, it affected their relationship.
“The really sucky thing about it is that my default can’t go to ‘There’s no way.’ That’s where it hurts the most, where I can’t just go, ‘I trust him 1000 percent. He would never do that,’” the musician said. “I think that’s where it stung. … I started DMing this person. They’re telling me things that maybe, could make sense or maybe, could be wrong. She said a few things about his hometown and I’m like, OK, they could just look that up on the internet. She said something about, ‘He’s got a secret device,’ which has always been a fear of mine, that maybe he has some secret device that he talks to other people on.”
Caussin added at the time that he didn’t “fault” Kramer for doubting him. “My hope is that years down the line, if something like this happened again, she’d be able to bring it to me and we’d almost be able to, like, laugh about it because there is that much trust in the bank,” he said.
