The Met Gala is officially back and the dress code is…

Everything you need to know about this year’s Gala

Last year, the Met Gala was cancelled for obvious reasons, though that didn’t stop influencers creating their own looks as part of the virtual Met Gala challenge.

We can all agree that you can’t beat an IRL red carpet though, which is why we’re so excited that the event is officially coming back, in two parts no less. It will consist of an intimate affair in September, going back to its usual full scale on ‘first Monday in May’ in 2022. Here’s everything we know so far.

What is the Met Gala 2021 theme?

And this year’s theme is… American Independence! It will tie in with the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition for the Costume Institute: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.

It will be shown in two parts, with part one exploring ‘a modern vocabulary of American style emphasising the expressive qualities of dress and deeper associations with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion’.

Part two ‘will present narratives that explore the development of American fashion as they relate to the complex and layered histories of those spaces’.

With that in mind, expect bold gowns by contemporary as well as stalwart American designers such as Christopher John Rogers or Ralph Lauren, though of course the Met Gala red carpet is often about extravagant looks. With that in mind, we wouldn’t be surprised to see celebs putting their own spin on the American flag.

The theme of the cancelled 2020 Met Ball was going to be, About Time: Fashion and Duration, marking the Met’s 150th anniversary, and was partly inspired by Virginia Woolf and the theories of the early-20th-century French philosopher Henri Bergson.

When is the Met Ball 2021?

The first part of Met Ball will happen on 13th September 2021, while the bigger event will yet again fall on the first Monday of Ma, which in 2022 will be Monday 2nd May.

Who will host the Met Gala 2021?

This year’s smaller event will be hosted by co-chairs Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka and honorary chairs Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour. The red carpet will be smaller so fewer guests will attend, but expect a star-studded guest list come May 2022.

Guests are expected to dress in keeping with said theme

The designers, editors and celebrities who attend are all supposed to choose their outfit in accordance with the theme of the year’s exhibit. This has seen some incredible successes over the years (we’re looking at you, Sarah Jessica Parker in tartan McQueen, 2006) but also some more, shall we say, fancy dress ensembles…

Cam Met Gala guests bring dates?

The MET Ball is a great place to be if you’re in a really, really ridiculously good-looking couple. Gigi and Zayn (RIP), Beyonce and Jay Z, Blake and Ryan – every A-list couple gets dressed up to go. And if you haven’t got a hot date? You become a muse and hang off the arm of your favourite designer, naturally.

It used to be called the Costume Institute Gala

Fun fashion fact for you there. The gala’s been going since 1946, which makes this year’s party the 72nd annual event. How will the fashion elite celebrate? With bolder hairdos, flashier jewels and even more enormous couture ensembles than ever before, we’d guess.
